This pin is a rare example of
Rodchenko's designs for the
Russian State Airline Dobrolet for
whom he worked for several years
as an 'artist-engineer'. As a pioneer
of the 'New Art of the Spirit of
Industry' he was interested in
beauty and functionality and made
plans for a better and more
humane world in the future. His
designs were inspired by the
technological wonder of flying
which he compared with the free
flight of artistic fantasy. He wrote:
'We had a vision of a new world,
industry, technology and science.
We were inventors and changers of
the world. We |

created new
concepts of beauty and extended
the idea of art itself.' Only the
families of Rodchenko and his wife
Varvara Fedorvna Stepanova are
known to own jewellery of this
design from the Dobrolet-series. |

Родченко родился в Петербурге в 1891.
Живописец-авангардист, декоратор, конструктор,
иллюстратор. Учился в художественной школе в Казани
в 1911-1914 у Н. Фешина и Г. Медведева. В 1914
переехал в Москву и увлекся идеями К. Малевича.
Учился в Строгановском училище в 1914-1916. Призван
на военную службу. В 1917 был одним из организаторов
профсоюза художников Москвы, секретарь «Молодой (левой)
федерации». Вместе с Татлиным и Якуловым оформлял
кафе «Питтореск» в Москве. В 1918 состоялась его
первая персональная выставка «Пять лет в искусстве».
Тогда же были сделаны «черное на черном» (в
противовес «белое на белом» Малевича). В 1919-1920
вместе с В. Кринским, А. Шевченко и Л. Поповой вошел
в объединение «Живскульптарх». В 1920-1930
преподавал в Вхутемасе-Вхутеине, был деканом
деревообрабатывающего факультета. После 1923 был
связан с журналами «Леф» и «Новый Леф», занимался
дизайном, фотографией, оформлением интерьеров, книг
и другим. Участник выставок с 1913. Последовательно
шел по пути конструктивизма в живописи. В 1918-1921
делает серию пространственных конструкций, в
1920-1921 – линейные конструкции. Сделал серию
абстрактных композиций в 1940-е годы, мебель для
рабочего клуба-читальни (представлял на
Международной выставке декоративного искусства и
промышленности в Париже в 1925), мебель и костюмы
для спектаклей «Клоп» В. Маяковского (1929, в Театре
им. В. Мейерхольда, Москва), «Инга» А. Глебова
(1929, в Московском театре Революции), оформление 13
книг В. Маяковскогож рекламные плакаты – к фильмам «Киноглаз»
(1924), «Броненосец Потемкин» (1925),
художественно-конструкторские работы для фильма «Ваша
знакомая» (1927). Умер в Москве в 1956. |
