Boui bouis [translated into German by Reinhold von
Walter]. Berlin:
Razum Verlag, [1924], copy number 480 of 500
copies, illustrations in the text, 28 lithograph plates,
original cloth-backed boards with gilt illustration and
lettering on upper cover
As Lolli Lvov pointed out in his 1923 Jar
Ptitza article
on the artistic visions of Boris Grigoriev, after
finishing the Faces
of Russia cycle, Grigoriev fell back under the
decadent spell of "European civilization." "Here
Grigoriev leads us far away from Russia, in fact to the
other side of the world, to the extreme borders of the
West, " writes Lvov. "Away from the capitals of Europe
and no longer in the bustling city of Paris, but to the
remote corners of the Mediterranean into the frenzied
harbors of the South of France. We are thrust into a
world of inebriation, where the air is saturated with
the stench of wine, and dockers and sailors spend their
free time in grubby harbor cafés poisoned by absinthe. Boui
Bouis, we cannot find human faces, we cannot meet a
human. Boui
Bouis is
a frightening book, the magic of Grigoriev's
draughtsmanship mezmerizes; however, our soul cringes
and we shudder from these spectres. Grigoriev strips the
human to its most essential, most unmasked" (Lolli Lvov,
"The Visions of Boris Grigoriev," Jar
Ptitza, 1923, no. 11, p. 6).
