Serafim Nikolayevich Sudbinin (1867-1944) and Louis Delachenal (1897-1966) met at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres shortly before the Second World War. Although the two men came from very different backgrounds, they immediately struck up a friendship. Delachenal started his ceramic art when he was still young, teaching himself ceramics in his hometown of Ferney-Voltaire. After training at Paul Bonifas' atelier, Delachenal joined the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres in 1924. The exceptional skills of the young artist were noticed immediately and he worked his way up through the ranks of the prestigious manufactory to become a modeller in 1932. In all, Delachenal created more than 150 models which have made their mark on French ceramics. Unlike Delachenal, Sudbinin came to ceramics much later in life. Born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1867, the young Russian turned first towards theatre and opera. He devoted himself to all the professions of the stage: costume designer, and theatre and opera set designer. In 1903, driven by a fascination for intellectual and artistic circles, he went to Paris, where he met Rodin who took him on as a pupil. By the time Sudbinin began his new career as a sculptor he was 40. After presenting two works at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, Sudbinin became the master's favourite pupil. In 1923, at the height of his fame, he made a trip to New York during which he discovered the Chinese ceramics of the Pierpont Morgan collection. So affected was Sudbinin by what he had seen that he decided to abandon sculpture to become a ceramicist. Like Louis Delachenal, Sudbinin undertook a great deal of research in ceramics and created new enamels, depleting his fortune in the process, before joining Delachenal at the Manufacture as a freelance artist. In 1943, Sudbinin's private atelier was destroyed during a bombing raid. A year later, Delachenal invited him to join him at the stoneware workshop in Saint-Méen-Le-Grand that he had just opened.
That very rare work from the Delachenal family collection is a testimony to the friendship and respect that these two avid ceramicists had for each other.

"In 1920th Soudbinine suddenly got the idea to make ceramics. Just as he had swapped acting for sculpture earlier in life, he now became a ceramicist. His ceramics were exhibited throughout the United States in the 20s and 30s. They intertwine the influences of Russian folk culture with Chinese art. This meditating Buddha is light, smooth, graceful and at peace. His hairless head, closed eyes and lotus position project the minimalism and Zen of Buddhist aesthetics"
