BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST

Alexandre Yevgenievich Jacovleff (Александр Евгеньевич Яковлев) was a Russian neoclassicist painter, draughtsman, designer and etcher.Alexandre was the son of a naval officer from Saint Petersburg, where he was born. Between 1905 and 1913 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Kardovsky. While a student he enjoyed drawing and worked for the art magazines Apollo, Satiricon, Niva, New Satiricon. After 1912, Jacovleff was a member of Mir Iskusstva. Jacovleff's large group portrait "On Academic Dacha" was exhibited at the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö in 1912, and received praise from the critics present, including Alexandre Benois. Academy student, Vladimir Shukhaev. They were almost inseparable, and received the nickname of The Twins.

In 1913, Jackovleff received the rank of an artist and a scholarship to study abroad for his paintings "Bathing" (Купание) and "In Banya". He went to Italy and Spain together with Shukhaev. There they painted their double self-portrait as Harlequin and Pierrot. Another important work of that period was "Violinist" painted in 1915. At that time Jacovleff attempted to integrate Renaissance art with Primitivism, especially the Russian Lubok.

In 1915, Jacovleff returned to Petrograd. The Mir Iskusstva exhibition and produced mixed reactions. While some critics praised them, the Academy of Arts rejected them. Jackovleff painted a lot of Sanguine drawings including the Shalyapin portrait. He frescoed Firsanov's mansion in Moscow, and the artistic cabaret Prival Komediantov in Petrograd. Artistic movement: St. Luke Guild of Painters (Цех Живописцев имени Святого Луки). He also reads on Women's Architect Courses and organized his own (together with Shoukhaev, Radlov and Kardovsky).

In the summer of 1917, Jacovleff received a scholarship to study in the Far East. He traveled to Mongolia, China and Japan (1917-1919). Subsequently he settled in Paris and obtained French Citizenship. Between 1924 and 1925 he took part in an expedition to the Sahara Desert and Equatorial Africa organized by Citroën. Jacovleff was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French Government in 1926. In 1928 Jacovleff organized a large personal exhibition in Moscow.

Between 1931 and 1932, he was the Artistic Adviser of another Citroën expedition, this time across Asia. He traveled through Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia and China, and created a number of exotic paintings.

From 1934 to 1937, Jackovleff was the Director of the Painting Department of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts. He spent the last few months of his life in Paris and Capri. He died in Paris in 1938, after an unsuccessful surgery.

Alexandre Iacovleff est né à Saint Pétersbourg dans la famille d’un officier de marine. Après une excellente scolarité, il se forme à l’Académie impériale des Beaux-Arts de 1905 à 1913 avec D. N. Kardovsky. Lauréat d’une bourse, il part en 1913 en Italie étudier les Maîtres de la Renaissance. Il voyage également en Espagne, où il découvre les oeuvres des primitifs catalans et du Gréco. En 1917-19, l’artiste parcourt la Chine, produisant un recueil complet d’oeuvres variées. Il s’installe à Paris en 1919 et finit par devenir citoyen français. En 1920, il expose à la galerie Barbazanges et les critiques sont excellentes. En 1922, il publie un album de ses dessins et peintures d’Extrême-Orient. Lors de son voyage, Iacovleff développe une fascination pour le théâtre chinois. Ce genre littéraire occupe une place centrale dans ses premières oeuvres : de nombreux projets de décors ou des autoportraits à la mise en scène théâtrale. Le livre publié en 1922 rassemble ses impressions personnelles et inclut une histoire du théâtre chinois. Il écrit : « Stylisé mais avant tout humain, cet art créé par un seul peuple, a été modelé par le temps. La volonté de l’individu y est gouvernée par les traditions des dynasties passées et nous relie ainsi aux époques anciennes. » Les peintures chinoises de Iacovleff et son expérience asiatique attirent l’attention de Georges Haardt, le chef de l’expédition en Centre Afrique de 1925, sponsorisée par Citroën. Il est donc choisi comme illustrateur officiel, rôle qu’il accepte avec enthousiasme. Cette Croisière noire, véritable expédition scientifique et culturelle fut organisée avant tout pour démontrer la force d’un transport motorisé à travers des contrées inexplorées et pour découvrir de nouvelles possibilités ferroviaires et maritimes entre les colonies françaises d’Algérie et de Madagascar. Ont été alors rassemblées un nombre considérable de données sur les plantes, les animaux, le territoire, les us et coutumes africaines en plus de l’illustration du voyage lui-même : au moins 500 dessins et peintures, incluant notre lot. Lors du retour triomphant de l’équipe, le musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris expose environ 300 oeuvres qui furent pour la plupart dispersées en à peine trois semaines.

Alexandre Iacovleff was born in St. Petersburg into a family of an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy. After studying at the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, in 1917–19, the artist traveled through China, producing an incredibly vast and mature body of work. Iacovleff settled in Paris in 1919, and subsequently became a naturalized French citizen. In 1920, Iacovleff exhibited the fruits of his East Asia trip at the Paris Galerie Barbazanges, a show that received excellent reviews. In 1922, the artist published an album of his sketches and paintings of the Far East. While in China, Iacovleff became especially fascinated with Chinese theater.. Iacovleff had previously completed various theater designs and depicted himself in self-portraits with theatrical motifs. His interest in Chinese theater prompted him to write and publish a book on the subject upon his return to France in 1922, in which he wrote: “Stylized, but fundamentally human, this art form, created by one people, has been shaped by time. This art, in which the individual will is ruled by noble traditions of past dynasties, connects us with ancient epochs.” Iacovleff’s China paintings and Asian experience brought him to the attention of Georges Haardt, the leader of the Citroën-sponsored expedition that traversed central Africa in 1925.

Iacovleff was chosen as official artist of the expedition, an appointment he accepted with great enthusiasm. The expedition, known as Croisière Noire (Black Crossing), was organized to demonstrate the feasibility of motor transport through unexplored regions of the continent, as well as investigate possible railway and nautical connections between the French colonies of Algeria and Madagascar. The trip also resulted in the compilation of considerable data on plants, animals, local terrain, African manners and customs, as well as the visual record of the journey itself: Iacovleff’s more than five hundred drawings and paintings of African people and the natural scenery, including the present lot. Upon the expeditioners’ triumphant return to Paris, the Musée des Arts décoratifs displayed over three hundred of Iacovleff’s works from the trip, many of which sold in just three weeks. Iacovleff also produced a significant body of work in the French island of Corsica.

Сын лейтенанта флота Евгения Александровича Яковлева (1857–1898), создателя первого в России двигателя внутреннего сгорания на жидком топливе (1889), основателя и владельца Первого русского завода газовых и керосиновых двигателей (ныне завод «Вулкан»), на котором в 1896 совместно с фирмой «Фрезе и Неллис» был создан первый отечественный автомобиль. Мать, София Петровна, урожд. Кузьмина (? – 1939) – доктор математических наук.
